Kapoor Dr. Aashish Chaudhry Department of Orthopaedics, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India Keywords: Chronic Osteomyelitis, Squamous cell carcinoma, marjolin ulcer Purpose: To present a case report of development of Squamous cell carcinoma in a patient with chronic osteomyelitis of pelvis Patient profile: An elderly patient with year long history of chronic osteomyelitis right side pelvis developed signs and symptoms suggestive of malignant change. Patient was taken up for incisional biopsy from the site of draining sinus. Patient was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma secondary to chronic osteomyelitis. Patient was taken up for wide local resection (Hemipelvectomy). Post-operatively, patient developed wound dehiscence. Proper care of the wound followed by skin grafting helped in healing of the wound. Good rehabilitation in post-operative period helped patient in becoming ambulatory in few weeks. Results: Appropriately planned wide local resection of the squamous cell carcinoma complicating chronic osteomyelitis has good functional results. Discussion & Conclusion: Development of Squamous cell carcinoma in chronic osteomyelitis is a rare event. Diagnosis of malignant change requires high index of suspicion. It is heralded by worsening of symptomatology Long term survival rates can only be commented upon after rigorous follow up of these patients.
