Born in Thailand, where he attended the prestigious Triamudom High School in Bangkok, Thailand,
Dr. Yieng received most of his undergraduate and medical education and post-graduate medical training
in Japan under Japanese Government Sponsorship. Dr. Yieng was trained in gastrointestinal cancer surgery under Professor Hiroshi Akiyama, an internationally known esophageal surgeon, at Toranomon Hospital
in Tokyo, Japan. He came to the United States in 1984 and completed a residency in surgery
at Harlem Hospital Center and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer.

From 1991 to 1995, Dr. Yieng was Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Director of the
Endoscopic Ultrasound Lab at the New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. Since joining the medical staff
of Valley in 1995, Dr. Yieng has expanded the Division of Surgical Oncology to include the latest technology
and techniques in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Dr. Yieng specializes in treating cancer of the GI system, liver, pancreas, and soft tissue sarcomas.
He has performed more than 100 robotic procedures at Valley and is internationally recognized
for his skills in endoscopic ultrasound, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic surgery.
Dr. Yieng is one of the first surgeons in New Jersey to use the daVinci Robotic Surgical System
to remove a spleen, adrenal glands, and tumors of the stomach, pancreas, and esophagus.
He is one of few surgeons in the country who performs endoscopic ultrasound, an imaging technique
that allows for effective diagnosis and staging of tumors.
Because of Dr. Yieng's volume and complexity of robotic cases, Valley has become a place where
surgeons from various hospitals as well as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center Cancer come to observe.

Dr. Yiengpruksawan performs more than 30 cases of major pancreatic surgery each year
with excellent results making Valley Hospital a high volume center, according to the Leapfrog Group
which defines "high volume" as more than 11 cases per year. He performs, on the average,
15 Whipple's Procedures (a technically demanding surgical procedure to remove cancer in the head
of the pancreas) per year. At Valley, he developed the hospital's radiofrequency ablation program
to treat liver tumors as an adjunct procedure or in place of liver resection. He has presented his works
and given lectures on endoscopic ultrasound and robotic surgery extensively both nationally and internationally.

Besides clinical research relating to endoscopic ultrasound and robotic surgery, Dr. Yieng is currently participating in several Valley Hospital clinical research studies with the Southwest Oncology Group
that are evaluating new treatment combinations of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy
for pancreatic, esophageal, and stomach cancers. His research has been published in numerous
medical journals and in book chapters.
